What is Zakat?

Zakat, one of the pillars of Islam, refers to the amount that those who possess wealth exceeding the religiously accepted threshold (nisab) must give to those in need.

Who can give zakat?

Zakat becomes obligatory for adult, free, and sane Muslims if a year has passed since acquiring the property subject to zakat, and the property exceeds one year's debts and basic needs.

How is Zakat calculated?

When calculating Zakat, the Zakat rate is calculated based on the remaining assets after deducting existing debts. You can calculate your Zakat amount according to the following Zakat rates: 1/40 of gold, silver, money, trade goods, and sheep and goats; 1/30 of cows, buffaloes, and similar large livestock; and 1/10 (tithe) of agricultural products. If someone spends money on irrigation while cultivating these products, they pay 1/20 of the total Zakat. For rental income-generating assets such as houses, shops, factories, motor vehicles, and machinery, 1/10 of the net income or 1/20 of the gross income must be paid as Zakat.

When is Zakat given?

Zakat can be given at any time throughout the year.
